According to a new report by Bloomberg, the population of Generation Z or Gen Z is set to overtake the Millennial population in less than a year. And experts predict that the preferences, behaviors, and tendencies of Gen Z will cause a radical change in the way the world operates.
The data
Bloomberg analyzed U.N. data and found that the Gen Z population will account for 32 percent of the world population in 2019. This will push the Millennial population to second place with a 31.5 percent population share. Bloomberg counted 2000/2001 as the year of the generational split, meaning that anyone born in 2001 or later is considered to belong to Gen Z.
Given that the global population is estimated to touch about 7.7 billion in 2019, Bloomberg’s projections will put the Gen Z population somewhere around 2.5 billion, essentially a third of the world’s population. People born after 2001 have started turning 18 this year, the minimum age to be considered a voter.
And as more Gen Z gets into the voting bloc, they are expected to bring huge changes in politics. In addition, the dependence of Gen Z on social media, tech, and their experience of growing up in a liberal society means that big changes are in store for the world.

Changing behaviors
The biggest way the Gen Z population will affect the world is through their political affinity. Experts predict that Gen Z will increasingly turn conservative in their views. This largely has to do with the fact that Gen Z essentially grew up in a society that was extremely leftist, where values like faith, family, masculinity, femininity were constantly under attack. As a consequence, the younger generation is projected to ditch the feminist, leftist politics that have dominated the world for the past decades and vote for more conservative parties.
A Forbes article states: “A UK Study at The Gild did a survey of almost 2,000 adults and found that on issues like gay marriage, marijuana legalization, transgender rights, and even tattoos, 59 percent of Gen Z respondents described their views as ‘conservative’ and ‘moderate.’ This is a radical change from 83 percent Millennials and 85 percent of Gen X who state that their views are ‘quite’ or ‘very liberal’ on those same issues.”
Conservative parties gaining large support among younger generation across European countries — such as Poland, Germany, Sweden, and Austria — are all indications that the future of politics will largely be conservative in nature. But does the shift toward conservatism mean that Gen Z will be more uncaring toward those who do not belong on their “side”? Certainly not.

As more and more of the Gen Z population enters adulthood over the next five years, we will definitely get a clearer idea as to which direction the world will move over the coming decades and the belief systems that will shape the opinions of the people.
